'Whilst Others May Imitate Us -
the Original is Still the Best'
Welcome
to our sweet shop
We hope you will find your visit to The Oldest Sweet Shop in
England a fascinating experience.
Situated in the picturesque Nidderdale town of Pateley Bridge in
the Yorkshire Dales, our little gem of a building dates from the
1630’s. It’s been featured on BBC Television and Radio
and the subject of countless magazine articles, including “Best
of British”, “Yorkshire Life” and “Down
Your Way”, to name but a few.
This shop really is a piece of England’s living history and
a Mecca for sweet and chocoholics the world over.
Tinkle
our lively bell and step inside our old stone building and you’ll
see the exposed oak beams and the open fire place, with its kettle
and cooking pans suspended over the fire grate.
Look a little further and you’ll spot our authentic till,
which dates from the late 1800’s and whose large paddle price
keys, are a constant delight to the many children ,who always ask
“Can I have a go please ?”Some of course, just love
the sound of their favourite selection tumbling out of their jars
into our traditional Avery scale pan.
Visitors,
both adults and children, stand in amazement as they gaze at the
pine shelves groaning under the weight of over 200 jars of sweets
of yesteryear, which include many you may have thought had disappeared
and yet appear before you, as reminders of times past and days enjoyed.
The hardest decision is deciding which to choose, or as many say
“Can I have one of everything”.
Being
the original and the oldest, our family run business understands
the development of sweets and believes there is no substitute for
quality. “Midget Gems” have to be Lions “the best
gums” and “Aniseed Balls” must have the seed in
the centre. These are the tried and tested favourites of countless
generations, which are as popular today as they’ve ever been.
No list of sweets though, however comprehensive, can ever replicate
a personal visit and we do hope one day you’ll come in person
and share with us, the ambience, aroma and experience of the sweet
paradise that is The Oldest Sweet Shop in England.
We live, eat and even drive Sweet!
